In The Beginning . . . God!

Teachable Moment

After reading the creation story and watching some theories about “The Big Bang”, I took some time to just share with my kids about how God’s “speaking the universe into existence” would have really resembled a “Big Bang”. It was interesting to talk about how Scientist look at scientific evidence and come up with theories that are really just their “best guess” to explain what they see. The only problem, is that they are trying to explain the existence of the universe without God! – and that just doesn’t work! We further discussed how many of the evolutionary theories actually have a lot of similarities to what the Bible says to be true. 

Here are just a few examples:

Evolutionary Teaching: The universe was formed as a result of the Big Bang.
Biblical Teaching: “God said, . . . and [BANG!] there was!” (Gen. 1)

Evolutionary Teaching: The fact that the universe is expanding is proof of the Big Bang. 
Biblical Teaching: The Bible teaches that God “stretches” out the Heavens, which supports (and even explains) the evidence we see in creation, of the universe “expanding”.  (Ps. 104:2, Is. 40:22)

Evolutionary Teaching: The earth is millions of years old. 
Biblical Teaching: Interesting note: when you read the story of creation, the “formless and empty earth” existed BEFORE Day 1 of creation! God created the earth in it’s raw, unformed state, and the Spirit of God was “hovering over” the “face of the waters” (which is just another way of describing the “formless” state of the earth’s matter) . . . So just think about this for a moment . . . if the “formless and empty” “watery” state of all of earth’s matter was created BEFORE “Day 1”, that means it existed BEFORE the existence of TIME. And if something existed BEFORE time, then it’s really quite impossible to even begin to determine the age of that thing (right?!) . . . So the simple fact that this “watery”, “formless”, “empty” mass was the the state of the earth BEFORE THE EXISTENCE OF TIME, then scientists aren’t really “wrong” (per say) in guessing that it’s millions of years old . . . the problem isn’t in their estimate for the age of the earth, the REAL problem is that they are trying to calculate the age of something that existed before the “dawn of age” – before the beginning of time as we know it!   

Evolutionary Teaching: All living things evolved from a prehistoric, primordial “soup”.  
Biblical Teaching: We just talked about the “formless and empty” “watery” state of the earth, so let’s expand on that just a little. If the earth didn’t have any shape, it didn’t yet have any land, plants, fish, animals, or people, but only contained the essential elements that God would later use to create these things . . . then wouldn’t all those elements of earth, in their “formless” and “watery” state . . . wouldn’t it have resembled something very similar to what the evolutionists are calling “primordial soup”? Again, the scientists aren’t far off! But without God, this “formless” and “watery” substance would have just STAYED as a “formless” and “watery” substance. Without God, this “primordial soup” would have just forever remained “primordial soup”. Because the reality is, living things can only come from other living things! So a primordial soup without a living being (like God!) could never become anything else – even if you waited for millions or even billions of years! But in the days of creation, we learn about how God took that “formless”, “empty”, “watery” substance and created both a beautiful world, AND all living creatures! Only a living God can create life from “primordial soup”! 

All this to say . . . There is a LOT of evidence to support creation, and the evolutionists have found it (but don’t want to admit it!). Scientists look at the earth, and science, and they don’t just “MAKE UP” these theories, they come up with them based on what evidence they find. The only problem is that they intentionally take God out of the picture. And WHEN they take God out of the picture, NOW they have to use their imaginations to come up with other possible explanations for how this evidence fits together to explain the formation of the universe and all living things. The evidence points to God, but secular scientists don’t WANT to believe that there is a God (Rom. 1:20), which is why most of their theories just don’t work! Their theories very quickly fall apart when you look into them too closely. They don’t make sense because they’re missing the most crucial piece of the puzzle – they’re missing God’s active role in creation!
